The Problem With a Cheap Windshield Replacement

Nobody wants to pay more than they need to. So when the time comes to replace your windshield, you may be thinking you want to spend as little as possible to get your car back on the road.

Now, we’re like you – we hate wasting money too. But there are some things in life where “cheap” can end up costing you much more in the long run… and not just financially.

What we have found over the years is that most people don’t understand the critical role their windshield plays in the overall safety and integrity of their car. More than just a barrier between you and the weather (or bugs), your windshield is also a pivotal component of your vehicle’s SRS – Safety Restraint System. This system also includes your airbags and seat belts, and the failure of just one of these components can compromise the entire system.

We recommend doing what you can to avoid windshield cracks in the first place. But accidents do happen. So when you do fall victim to the problem, it’s worth considering these 3 main issues with “cheap windshield repairs”:

Cheap windshield replacement problems

Problem #1 – Reduced “Ejection Protection”

Did you know one of your windshield’s jobs is to prevent you and your passengers from being ejected out the front of the car in the event of an accident? It’s not a nice thought to ponder, but in the event of your seat belt failing your windshield can be your last line of defense.

The windshield is made up of two layers of glass, surrounded by a layer of flexible polyvinyl material which is designed to soften the impact if struck by an occupant of the vehicle. If not installed correctly, the occupants can be flung from the vehicle. Studies show that over 30% of vehicle fatalities each year result from the victim being ejected from the vehicle.

You can understand why we take our services so seriously!

Problem #2 – Improper Airbag Function

Poorly installed windshields can cause the airbag to not activate correctly, or may be “blown out” by the airbag upon impact, rendering both safety measures useless – and creating a highly dangerous situation for the vehicle’s occupants.

Our auto glass technicians are highly trained in the art of windshield installation.

Problem #3 – Reduced Vehicle Structure & Strength

The windshield also protects the vehicle’s roof from collapsing due to impact, such as if the car “rolls”.

Auto glass shops who use cheap windshields (or do not train their staff adequately) can inadvertently create significant risk to their customers by turning their once safe vehicle into a death trap.
